DTF vs Sublimation: which fits your clothing brand?
A comparison of modern printing techniques and which delivers the best quality and color.

Print quality is the first thing a customer notices. At MerchLab Studio we use two main techniques — DTF (Direct to Film) and Sublimation — and each has its strengths.
DTF — best for cotton
A modern technique that prints the design on a special film, then transfers it to fabric with heat. Result: vibrant colors, sharp detail, and high durability even after 50+ washes. Ideal for cotton t-shirts, hoodies, and sweatshirts.
Sublimation — best for polyester
Infuses ink directly into the fabric for a perfectly smooth feel. Ideal for sportswear, bags, and accessories. Provides full-color prints with no boundaries.
Which to pick?
If your brand is cotton-based (t-shirts, hoodies, sweats) → DTF. If sport or accessories → Sublimation. At MerchLab we automatically pick the right technique for each product, so you can focus on the brand.
Tips for the best quality
- Use a transparent PNG at 300 DPI or higher
- Don't use low-quality images from the web
- Avoid very smooth gradients on DTF
- Order a sample before launching a full collection
